ТMА 01 (ТО REACH YOUR TUTOR BY 17 DECEMBER 2007)

QUESTION I

In the first part of this assignment you are required to post information in your Tutor Group Forum (TGF) about your organisation, and to engage in on-line discussion with at least one other student to explore areas of similarity and difference. You should discuss the reasons for, and the effects of, any differences. The information exchanged will be about structure and culture and need not cover anything of a strictly confidential nature. Please remember to respect the confidentiality of others as you would expect them to respect yours.

Your tutor will set up sub-conferences in your TGF to enable these discussions to take place. If, exceptionally, some discussion needs to take place by phone or in person, a summary of these discussions should be posted in the TGF to enable the tutor to give credit for this. In subsequent assignments where collaborative discussion is required, marks will be deducted if there is no evidence that you have used your TGF for these discussions.

It is essential that you post information on your organisation well in advance of the submission date of the assignment. We suggest that you aim to have completed this information exchange by 5 December 2007 at the latest.

’Successful organisations must anticipate possible change and position themselves to deal with opportunities and challenges in a proactive rather than a reactive way’ (Morgan, quoted in B713 Block 1 Study Session 3).

To complete this assignment you should write a report to your manager which compares and contrasts how well the structure and/or the culture of your organisation and those of one of your fellow students serve to fit the challenges of the external environments in which each operates.

Arising from your analysis, you should suggest recommendations for changes in structure and/or culture to improve the fit between internal and external environment in your own organisation.

QUESTION 2

Reflect on the experience of applying the course ideas in Question 1, and on your reading of Study Sessions 1-6. Identify two ways in which your thinking about management practice has changed as a result, and what you might do differently at work in the future because of these changes. This question is asking you to extract personal learning points — a habit central to lifelong learning.

GUIDANCE

You should draw particularly on material in Perspectives Sections 2 and 3 and Study Sessions 3, 4 and 5 of Block 1 when preparing this report.

In allocating marks to Question 1, your tutor will use the following framework:

  • analysis of the external environment(s)
  • (20 marks)

  • analysis of the structures and/or cultures of the two organisations
  • (20 marks)

  • critical analysis of the fit between internal and external environments in each case
  • (25 marks)

  • recommendations for change in your own organisation
  • (10 marks)

  • the structure and style of your report
  • (10 marks)

Your answer to Question 1 should be in the form of a report and should not exceed 2,000 words. Your answer to Question 2 should not exceed 500 words.

Guidance on writing a report is given in Chapter 15 of The MBA Handbook, and guidance on systems maps is given in Chapter 10 of the Handbook.

All material that you use in your answer must be fully and properly referenced.

    QUESTION 1

Motivating yourself and your team is important to your effectiveness as a manager. Write a short report on motivation within your organisation, and ways in which it might be improved. Argue primarily from an analysis of your own motivation, but draw also on what you perceive to be the reasons for both your own manager’s motivation, and the motivation of someone who works for or with you.

    (50 marks)

    GUIDANCE

In answering Question 1 you should make use of the concepts and analytical frameworks presented in Study Session 14. Make sure that your analysis is based on theories of motivation, and addresses issues of motivation for your line manager and colleague, not solely for yourself. You may find it helpful to discuss your ideas with colleagues in your TGF and ask questions of those in your workplace. If motivation in your organisation is high, identify and discuss those features that contribute to the high motivation and that need to be retained. Your answer should not exceed 2,000 words, and should be in the form of a report.
